Shonen Jump (1/20/21-1/24/21)

We have reached our third rendition of this manga recap. There are a ton of series to discuss so let's get right into it. Be sure to share which ones are favorites of yours and if you want me to read some other series in Shonen Jump.

Dragonball Super

We are entering a new arc with a potential new villain (or teammate?) by the name of Granolah. He is the sole survivor from the planet Cereal and has a grudge to settle with Frieza for what he did to his people. Who would the forces who annihilated the population of Cereal? Saiyans of course. It is going to be good to have what can be a tense encounter between Granolah and Goku/Vegeta. As we are back on Earth, Goku and Vegeta are undergoing their own training sessions with their respective mentors. Whis is an Angel whose techniques work well with Goku. This leaves Vegeta with Beerus to learn the ways of the God of Destruction. It has been a long time coming for Vegeta to have someone teach him in a way that fits his nature. Looking forward to the February drop after reading this 5 star episode.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations

Image from Shonen Jump

When one prodigy is free from their turmoil, the other is taken over due to exhaustion. Boruto is the one in need of saving and this becomes a tense situation. Naruto is down for the count while Sasuke is missing an eye (the young folk coming hard at the old folks) which leaves Kawaki to save the day. Momoshiki plans to use Kawaki as a tribute to acquire the charka fruit and this makes the situation grow in danger levels quickly! Sasuke realizes to beat Momoshiki, we need to have Boruto's charka replenished. I enjoyed this chapter mainly due to Kawaki using his quick wit to outmaneuver Momoshiki. This progresses the story along and forces to realize there is a lot more story to tell in this sequel project. Five star special.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes

Image from Shonen Jump

We come to the conclusion of the flashback montage of Overclock dealing with some villains who were exhibiting similar power upgrades that was occurring in the present. The detective connected to both cases is realizing the similarities and is taken out by Overclock's "successor". I look forward to when the storyline in Vigilantes affects the main storyline. It has progressed greatly and there is more to go. Another five star special.

Kaiju No. 8

Image from Shonen Jump

Kafka gets a promotion and acknowledged from his childhood friend is the type of content we love to see. Unfortunately, Hoshina is gunning for Kaiju No.8 in his training which spooks Kafka to his core. All was quiet until a fleet of high level Kaiju come towards the base in the sky. This chapter was pretty straightforward and was a setup for the next one. I can tell we have a battle with complete chaos for the entire team. This week is four stars but I know next week has five star (even six star) potential.

Dr. Stone

Image from Shonen Jump

While traveling, the team has broken down some of the petrifying devices to uncover that they are powered by diamonds. Not just any diamonds but ones cut in a particular way to reflect the energy the device emits. You know what that means. We are adding another item to be created. Senku and company go over the instructions to create diamonds which goes to show how we are steadily moving to the present with each creation. I look forward to what happens when the crew master the petrifying device and figure out who is the big bad behind this incident. Five star five star five star.

Black Clover

Image from Shonen Jump

Last week, we had the heroes with the advantage and in the blink of an eye the villains pull out a trump card. I'll be honest in a series that usually makes the heroes seem destined to win, you get nervous at times. The gates of the underworld are opened to a rouge agent accelerating the process. Plot twist like this increase the tension and let you know this is endgame mode. I had to give this a six star rating because we are on a high with the anxiety reading this one.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Image from Shonen Jump

Geto is in the lead as villain of the year and it is only January. He has cast a spell on two types of non sorcerers: ones who ingested cursed objects and the others who inherited curse techniques who brains were meant to be non sorcerers. The former received strength as vessels and the latter the ability to use cursed techniques. In a sense, he created a thousand people similar to our main character. This expands the world and has Yuji needing to get stronger immediately. I love villains who operate from a sense of controlled chaos. This series is ramping up quite nicely. Six star status for a leader on Shonen Jump.

Sakamoto Days

Image from Shonen Jump

This chapter had Shin on the ropes and losing a battle with poison. He does something outlandish and tackles the assassin off the ride into a theater performance. The poison has Shin losing his sight. Somehow he was able to fight and defeat him the opposition by listening to his master's thoughts to get the final blows in. The dynamic between our main character and his sidekick is going along quite nicely. Solid chapter and another engaging experience.

My Hero Academia

Image from Shonen Jump

We start the chapter with the league of villains breaking into other prisons to strengthening their numbers. AFO and Shigaraki are finally getting rest while the heroes awake to the after effects from their battle with the villains. Our big three are dealing with their own feelings of inadequacy. Bakugo is worried about Deku/Todoroki/Endeavor which goes to show he is learning how to care for people outside of himself. Todoroki is coming to the understanding he has to be the one to take out his older brother since his father won't be able too. To close, the teachers are still out with serious wounds and Deku isn't waking up. I anticipate the next chapters will see Deku speak to OFA in the trance like state he is in. Five star while we wait for the next chapter to come out soon.
